Ear Weights: What They Are, How to Wear Them & Our Favorites

What Are Ear Weights?

Ear weights are a unique and dramatic category of body jewelry designed for stretched ears. Unlike plugs and tunnels that sit inside the piercing, ear weights hang from the lobe — using their own weight to stay in place via a magnetic closure, clicker ring, or hook. The result is a piece of jewelry that moves with you, catches the light, and creates a striking visual effect.

Beyond aesthetics, ear weights can also provide a gentle, gradual stretching effect over time — though they should never be used as a primary stretching method.

How Do Ear Weights Work?

Most ear weights use one of three closure systems:

  • Magnetic closure — the most common. Two magnetic ends hold the weight in place around the lobe. Easy to put on and take off, comfortable for daily wear.
  • Clicker closure — a hinged ring that clicks shut. More secure than magnetic, great for active wear.
  • Hook — a simple hook that passes through the stretch. The most traditional style, used in many ancient cultures.

What Size Do You Need?

Ear weights are designed for lobes that are already stretched to a minimum size. Each weight specifies the minimum gauge required — typically anywhere from 3mm (1/8") to 16mm (5/8"). You don't need to be exactly at that size — any stretch at or above the minimum will work.

At Vint'Age, our ear weights range from pieces that fit from 3mm all the way up to 16mm minimum, so there's something for every stage of your stretching journey.

Can Ear Weights Stretch Your Ears?

Yes — but slowly and gently. The constant downward pull of a weight can gradually increase your gauge over time. This is actually how many traditional cultures have stretched their ears for centuries. However, this method is very slow and unpredictable, so it shouldn't replace the taper method if you have a specific size goal in mind.

If you're happy with your current size and just want to wear beautiful jewelry, ear weights are perfect. If you're actively trying to stretch, use tapers and follow the standard stretching protocol.

Tips for Wearing Ear Weights

  • Don't sleep in ear weights — the constant pull overnight can thin and elongate your lobes
  • Start with lighter weights (under 15g) if you're new to wearing them
  • Massage your lobes with oil after removing weights to restore circulation
  • Alternate between weights and regular plugs/tunnels to give your lobes a rest
  • Check the magnetic closure regularly to ensure it's secure
