How to Choose Your First Ear Gauge: A Beginner's Buying Guide

Starting Your Stretching Journey

Choosing your first ear gauge can feel overwhelming — there are so many styles, materials, sizes, and types to consider. But the good news is that for beginners, the choices are actually quite simple. This guide will walk you through exactly what to look for when buying your first set of ear gauges.

Step 1: Start with a Taper

Before you can wear a plug or tunnel, you need to stretch your ear to the right size. That's where tapers come in. A taper is a cone-shaped tool that gradually guides your ear from its current size to the next one.

For your very first stretch (from a standard piercing to 16g or 14g), you'll need a taper in the target size. We recommend:

  • Steel tapers for precision and hygiene — easy to sterilize and hypoallergenic
  • Acrylic tapers for a lightweight, affordable option

At Vint'Age, our taper range starts from 1.2mm (3/64") and goes up to 30mm, covering every stage of your journey.

Step 2: Choose Your First Plug or Tunnel

Once you've stretched to your target size, you'll replace the taper with a plug or tunnel. For beginners, we recommend:

Single-Flare Tunnels

Single-flare tunnels have one flared end and are held in place with an O-ring on the other side. They're the easiest to insert and remove, making them ideal for fresh stretches. Our Classic Steel Tunnel and Steel Screwback Tunnel are perfect starting points.

Threaded Plugs

Threaded plugs screw together, offering a secure fit without O-rings. Great for beginners who find O-rings fiddly.

Step 3: Choose the Right Material

For your first stretch, material matters more than aesthetics. Stick to:

  • Implant-grade titanium — the safest choice, especially if you have sensitive skin. Our titanium range is perfect for beginners.
  • Implant-grade stainless steel — a great affordable option for most people
  • Glass — non-porous and easy to clean, excellent for healed stretches

Avoid acrylic, wood, and silicone for fresh stretches — save these for when your ears are fully healed.

Step 4: Pick a Style You Love

Once you've got the basics right — correct size, right material, appropriate type — it's time to think about style. At Vint'Age, we have something for every aesthetic:

  • Minimalist — Classic Steel Tunnel, Steel Screwback Tunnel, Titanium Silver Plug
  • Gothic & dark — Cross Tunnel, Skull Barbs Tunnel, Baphomet Tunnel
  • Colorful & fun — Translucent Acrylic Plugs in blue, pink, yellow, red, purple, green
  • Spiritual & symbolic — Flower of Life Tunnel, Triskele Tunnel, Viking Compass Tunnel
  • Premium & iridescent — our full Titanium collection

What NOT to Buy as a Beginner

  • Double-flare jewelry — requires a fully healed, flexible stretch to insert safely
  • Ear weights — for healed stretches only, not suitable for fresh piercings
  • Wood or organic materials — porous and not suitable for healing tissue
  • Very large sizes — start small and work your way up gradually

Your First Purchase Checklist

  • ✅ A single-flare tunnel or threaded plug in the same size
  • ✅ Implant-grade steel or titanium material
  • ✅ A good lubricant (jojoba oil or ear stretching balm)
  • ✅ Patience — the most important item on the list
